Understanding WordPress Multisite and Child Themes

WordPress Multisite allows you to manage multiple websites from a single WordPress installation. This is powerful for creating language-specific versions of your site. When it comes to customization, especially for distinct styling across different sites within a network, child themes are the standard and most robust approach. A child theme inherits the functionality and styling of its parent theme. Any modifications you make to the child theme will not be overwritten when the parent theme is updated, ensuring your customizations are preserved.

For a multi-language setup, you might have a separate site within your Multisite network for each language (e.g., `example.com/en/`, `example.com/fr/`, `example.com/es/`). Each of these sites might require unique styling to better suit the cultural context or simply to differentiate them visually. This guide will walk you through creating and managing child themes for each language site, ensuring your custom styles are applied correctly and independently.

Setting Up a Basic Child Theme

Before diving into Multisite specifics, let’s establish the foundation: a standard WordPress child theme. Every child theme requires at least two files: a stylesheet (`style.css`) and a functions file (`functions.php`).

Creating the `style.css` File

Navigate to your WordPress installation’s theme directory. For a standard installation, this is typically `wp-content/themes/`. For Multisite, you’ll find themes in `wp-content/themes/` and potentially `wp-content/mu-plugins/themes/` if you’re using the `sunrise.php` method for network-activated themes. We’ll assume the standard `wp-content/themes/` for this example.

Create a new folder for your child theme. The folder name should be descriptive, for instance, `my-parent-theme-child-en` for an English version. Inside this folder, create a `style.css` file with the following header. Replace `My Parent Theme` with the actual name of your parent theme.

The crucial line here is `Template: my-parent-theme`. This directive tells WordPress which theme is the parent. Ensure `my-parent-theme` exactly matches the directory name of the parent theme you are using.

Creating the `functions.php` File

Next, create a `functions.php` file in the same child theme directory (`wp-content/themes/my-parent-theme-child-en/`). This file is essential for enqueuing the parent and child theme stylesheets correctly. Without this, your child theme’s styles might not load, or they might override the parent theme’s styles incorrectly.

Important Note on Parent Stylesheet Handle: The handle `$parent_style = ‘my-parent-theme-style’;` is critical. You need to find the correct handle used by your parent theme. The easiest way to do this is to open the parent theme’s `style.css` file and look for the `wp_enqueue_style()` call in its `functions.php`. Often, it’s something like `’theme-style’`, `’parent-style’`, or the theme’s slug. If you get this wrong, your parent theme’s styles won’t load correctly.

Implementing Child Themes in a Multisite Network

In a Multisite setup, you have two primary methods for managing themes: Network Activate or allow individual site administrators to activate themes. For distinct styling per language site, you’ll want to ensure the correct child theme is activated for each language site.

Method 1: Network Activation and Assignment

This is the most controlled approach. You, as the network administrator, ensure the parent theme and all necessary child themes are installed and available to all sites. Then, you can assign the appropriate child theme to each language site.

Step 1: Install Parent and Child Themes

Upload your parent theme and all your child themes (e.g., `my-parent-theme-child-en`, `my-parent-theme-child-fr`, `my-parent-theme-child-es`) to the `wp-content/themes/` directory of your WordPress installation.

Step 2: Network Activate Themes

Log in to your WordPress Network Admin dashboard. Navigate to Network Admin > Themes. You will see a list of all themes installed on your network. For each theme you want to make available, click the Network Activate link. Ensure your parent theme and all your language-specific child themes are network activated.

Step 3: Assign Child Themes to Specific Sites

Now, go to Network Admin > Sites. Click the Edit link for the specific language site you want to configure (e.g., the French site). On the site’s edit screen, under the Settings tab, you’ll find a “Theme” dropdown. Select the appropriate child theme for that language (e.g., `My Parent Theme Child – French`). Save changes.

Repeat this process for each language site, assigning its corresponding child theme. This ensures that the French site uses `my-parent-theme-child-fr`, the Spanish site uses `my-parent-theme-child-es`, and so on.

Method 2: Site-Specific Activation (Less Control)

In this method, you make themes available network-wide, but individual site administrators can choose and activate themes for their own sites. This is less ideal for strict branding but can be useful if site admins have some autonomy.

Step 1 & 2: Install and Network Activate Themes

Follow the same steps as Method 1 to install and network activate your parent theme and all child themes.

Step 3: Site Administrator Activation

Instruct the administrators of each language site to log in to their respective site’s dashboard. They should navigate to Appearance > Themes. They will see all network-activated themes. They can then activate the correct child theme for their site. For example, the administrator of the French site would activate `My Parent Theme Child – French`.

Creating Language-Specific Child Themes

The process for creating child themes for other languages is identical to the English one, with minor modifications to the `style.css` header and potentially the `functions.php` for language-specific enqueuing if needed (though usually not required for basic styling).

Example: French Child Theme

Create a folder named `my-parent-theme-child-fr` in `wp-content/themes/`.

Applying Custom Styles

Once your child themes are set up and activated for the correct language sites, you can add your custom CSS to the respective child theme’s `style.css` file. For example, to add a specific border to all `h1` tags on the French site:

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Styles Not Loading:
    • Double-check the `Template:` line in your child theme’s `style.css`. It must exactly match the parent theme’s folder name.
    • Verify the parent theme’s stylesheet handle in `functions.php`. Use your browser’s developer tools (Network tab) to inspect loaded stylesheets and find the correct handle if unsure.
    • Ensure the child theme folder and files have correct file permissions (readable by the web server).
    • Clear your browser cache and any WordPress caching plugins.
  • Parent Theme Styles Overridden Incorrectly:
    • Ensure you are using `wp_enqueue_style` with the parent handle as a dependency in your child theme’s `functions.php`. This guarantees the parent styles load *before* the child styles, allowing the child styles to override.
    • If a specific style isn’t overriding, it might be due to CSS specificity. You may need to use more specific selectors or `!important` (use sparingly) in your child theme’s `style.css`.
  • Multisite Theme Management Confusion:
    • Understand the difference between “Network Activate” and “Activate”. Network Activate makes the theme available to all sites; Activate applies it to the current site.
    • For distinct styling per language, you generally want to Network Activate all relevant themes and then assign them per site (Method 1).
  • Child Theme Not Appearing in Theme List:
    • Ensure the `style.css` header is correctly formatted. Any syntax errors can prevent WordPress from recognizing the theme.
    • Check that the theme folder is in the correct `wp-content/themes/` directory.

Advanced Considerations

For more complex scenarios, you might need to enqueue additional scripts or styles specific to certain languages. This can be done within the `functions.php` of your child theme, often using conditional tags like `is_multisite()` and `get_current_blog_id()` or by checking the current language if you’re using a translation plugin like WPML or Polylang.

Conditional Enqueuing Based on Site ID

If you have a predictable site ID for each language (e.g., Site 1 for English, Site 2 for French), you can enqueue specific assets.
